Meeting her at an event you feel her energy, you can't help but be moved by her and want to know more about everything about her. Getting to sit down with her is everything you would expect on Christmas morning if you could unwrap a human. The way this interview came about was through two very good friends. One, August Skamenca first sent me Mrs. Herring's assistant's name and number but in a wild desire to clean the entire world I accidentally deleted the info! I requested it again but August was on assignment for CBS Radio and couldn't get back to me. Not being one to be deterred, I sent a message to her via facebook knowing full well there would be a huge firewall to get through. Turns out the firewall was another friend, Corbett Parker who has been working with Joanne with Afghanistan and on this book for more than three years. Needless to say, when I did finally call they were waiting for me! Imagine...Joanne King Herring waiting for YOUR call! It was a Thursday and I was sitting in the hairdresser's chair...in Dallas... when I had time to actually dial the phone and the most refreshing thing happened, Joanne answered her own phone. There are no airs about this woman, she really is as approachable and down to earth as Julia Roberts portrays her if not more so. She let me know instantly that she had a goal and it was to have her new book Diplomacy and Diamonds be number one on the best sellers list by Saturday and since DISH is an online magazine and we can publish instantly she wanted to do the interview RIGHT THEN! I was grossly unprepared! I said I could call back in a bit or come back from Dallas early that evening to interview her. She, of course, had an event that she was willing to "get sick" for to make this interview happen. When she revealed that she has purchased a table (meaning she was hosting 10 people) I offered to meet her at her event and interview her in the lobby to which she responded,

"Well why don't you just join us, wear jeans and a sweater it's a picnic in the park!"

Who could refuse! She had a goal and I wanted that interview! I left the hairdresser's with wet hair, packed and drove the 4 hours home a day early. (By the way, Tina Harrison is THE best colorist in TEXAS and if you are looking for a new person or want to be in the most talented person's chair, make your appointment today and tell her DISH sent you! You'll thank me!)

In 50 degree weather with the sounds of Grammy Award Nominated Mary Griffin singing in the background we sat in the corner and chatted away. I wanted to know everything I could before we turned blue.

I started with the obvious question: Why Afghanistan? To which she educated me ever so gently,

"In all of the years our military has been over there they have yet to create one self sustaining village. With our non-profits we have one almost finished in only four years. We've created a 6 month long educational program for their military so they can read a manual, write and do small sums, we're educating their children so they can grow up to be leaders, and develop and sustain a democracy. We're teaching them how to get clean water, grow their own food like soy that they can then sell for profit and creating a minimal medical system so the women won't die in childbirth and will be able to create healthy milk for their new babies. The Afghan people have been enslaved and kept ignorant and in poverty by the Hezbollah, Hamas, and Muslims. The only way the Afghan people will be free is for us to give them tools and skills to break free."

She went on to inform me that Gene Green and Michael McCaulare leaving tomorrow (Nov 4, 2011) to visit the model village in Afghanistan that is being built. The goal isn't to send a bunch of Americans over to do it but to have a few key folks who can help them help themselves. They are also creating a sewing building in each village where designers Kate Spade and Cesar Galindo have already agreed to employ the women in the village after they learn how to sew.

The really fun part about this entire project is that America has spent 14 BILLION and achieved nothing in setting the Afghan people up to be prosperous for themselves. The Marshall Plan Charitiescan do that for just 2 billion and set up EVERY village. It's already been launched and it was paid for by Houstonians. Not one penny was taken from the US government.

With the heavy lifting for the brains put aside because we were getting cold and our wine glasses had run dry she left me with a few anecdotes.

The first one was telling me how to get someone's attention in a receiving line if you'd really like to meet them. She started with Prince Philip.

"I have trouble sleeping you see, so when you're having trouble sleeping I always think about dancing with a handsome man and Prince Philip is handsome now but was VERY handsome when he was younger. So when I met him in line I mentioned to him that when I had trouble sleeping I thought of dancing in the Buckingham Palace Ballroom with him, after he finished blushing he asked me to dance! His assistant told me later that he never thought anyone could ever make Prince Philip blush!"

The last story was my favorite:

"One of the things I do is crisis management! When a politician or Hollywood celebrity is in trouble I help them out! SO what do you do when you're at a formal dinner and a big MARRIED celebrity puts his hand on your thigh?"

I waited with baited breath...WHAT WHAT WHAT???

She responded with the greatest giggle I've ever heard,

"Read the book!"

Emmy Award Winning Reporter Bert Lozano.

Below is a moving tribute from one of his former colleagues and friend Houston reporter Kristing Galvan Scott:

On Monday morning I learned a good friend from my past was hospitalized in critical condition. Bert Lozano reported for my old station KRGV in the Valley, then KSAT in San Antonio, and WFAA in Dallas.

I met Bert while he was with KSAT. At the time I worked for KRGV, and since we were an ABC affiliate and didn't have a Sat truck, we worked with KSAT quite a bit.

We did things differently at KRGV. We were more of a reporter/ photog steady team, and I always worked with KRGV's then chief photographer Izzy Alfaro. Izzy and Bert were old friends, and before long I considered Bert a guardian angel. He was such a good guide and mentor. I experienced the Tony Sanchez/ Dan Morales showdown, the demise of Shuttle Columbia, the capture, rescue and return of Mission's POW during the start of the Iraq war, the bolting of Texas Democrats during the 2003 redistricting crisis, and Hurricane Claudette with Bert at my side, and in some cases sharing an IFB!

Bert, Izzy, and I laughed at Lt. Governor David Dewhurst's response (in terrible Spanish) to one of my questions. Uhmm, Mr. Dewhurst, yes I work for a Valley station, but it's an ABC station, not Univision!!!

He stood right next to me in a plain white tee shirt that I knew Jenny Martinez (KRGV's News Director) would have a fit if I had been wearing during Hurricane Claudette. Since I was working through his KSAT truck, I had to take what I could, and the truck operator couldn't switch Bert's IFB for mine in time. That meant I had to listen to KSAT's programming while reporting for KRGV, hoping the IFB would switch in time for my tag. It didn't, but Bert never left my side. I can still see him mouthing " Focus, Focus, Focus." I've since learned to pull that thing out of my ear and hope my photog can dial up the producer booth and cue me on time.

Bert died today. He was just 42 years old.

Izzy and I cried over it. Theres a special thing about KRGV. That station breeds family. This weekend was suppose to be a huge KRGV stationreunion at South Padre Island. I wasn't planning on being there because of another commitment, but Bert was going to be there... to see all the people who shaped him through his career, and those whose careers he helped shaped.

You shouldn't have died so young, Bert. I'll miss you. We will all miss you... your amazing smile, your creativity, your drive.... as David Dewhurst once said:

"Yo piense que la gente de el valle......"

Love you very, very much...

I know I do.

Kristine Galvan Scott

The Beatles Were Right! Hopefully scientists can unlock more secrets like this soon!

UNT Offers Vegan Option

There is truth to the saying, "If you build it they will come". The University of North Texas gives the heave ho to the freshman 15 with an all-vegan dinning hall!

What a great way to lead the way UNT!!!

The vegan dinning hall is called "Mean Greens" and their website says:

“Vegan dining is not just for vegans but for all who seek to eat a balanced diet that offers a host of health benefits. In addition to tasting good and being good for you; vegan dining is sustainable and helps to reduce our carbon footprint which is good for the earth.”

Checked out Mean Green's menu! DISH wants to go eat there!

Now don't misunderstand, the entire campus is not vegan. There are a total of 5 on campus dining halls and only Mean Green's is vegan. PLUS they still have the on campus fast food chains like Taco Bell and Chick Fil A.
However this is a great option for the kids and DISH feels is should be considered at all Universities! Esp Texas A&M where they can actually grow their own!

What a TIME! DISH was invited to the Rose Room at S4 on Cedar Springs for the Friday night gender illusion experience. Now, we've been to these shows before so there was curiosity as to if these shows were all the same of if there was something special that set this one apart.

While waiting for the show to start the first thing DISH loved is that the room and stage are was HUGE! no one was sitting on top of each other, there were three table lines runways for the Queens to strut down so everyone could see and if you didn't have a seat you had to stand behind the line so there wasn't any crowding! There was table service so we didn't have to get through the crowd to a drink AND the table service was chock full of young, really hot boys dressed like Romans! OOHH This made DISH very happy!

Now to the show itself! First of all, we were blown away that the show started ON TIME!!! The tick of 11 pm and Edna Jean Robinson was on stage! She's an amazing drag and hysterical comedian! She had us in stitches all night!

We were then entertained but Cassie Nova, Krystal Summers, Jenna Skyy and Asia O'Hara to name a few.

These performances were phenominal! It's not just that they are men...they are performers! The art of their outfits, the body language, the dancing, the make up everything was broadway quality but up close and personal...more over, it seemed like it was just for you!

The evening ended early for DISH so we didn't get to see the entire event however on our way to our car one of our favs...who shall remain nameless...was standing out back still dressed up but seemingly upset. We asked if she was ok, she answered yes. We then asked for a photo in which we were told by the man with her that they needed at least 25 feet... we gave her that and more. No need to be nasty! Once a queen always a diva!

That didn't put a bad taste in our mouths though (that was the salt we drunkenly put on our french toast next door), we will absolutely go back again! This was a night to remember!

If you have the opportunity to experience this, please do and tell them DISH sent you!

Special thanks to Tina Harrison and Melissa Timmerman for treating DISH to such a wonderful evening! DISH KISSES! xo
